A surge in demand for web skills, driven by the creation of second generation websites including MySpace and YouTube, has pushed up pay rates for top web developers. Over the past year, salaries for permanent web developers have soared by 27% with some skilled developers earning as much as £50,000 a year.
The latest research by Skills Market/The Association of Technology Staffing Companies shows that web developers are now amongst the most sought after IT professionals in the UK. But a slowdown in the number of graduates going into the IT profession, is leading to a bidding war for talent, Atsco claims. “We are now facing a skills crisis similar to the late 1990s. Back then, it seemed every train carriage had at least one 20-year-old reading a Java manual, but the excitement is more muted now and graduates are not flocking to learn web technologies in the numbers they once did,” said Ann Swain, ATSCO chief executive.

About 72 million Americans are expected to spend more than $700 million today, Cyber Monday. But a decade after e-commerce started in earnest, retailers remain unprepared, a study shows.
Ten of 30 major retailers had problems handling their Web site traffic Friday, with Web-page responses slowing between 10 and 400 percent from their pre-Black Friday performance, according to Keynote Systems, a San Mateo, Calif., company that measures Web site performance.
Keynote spokesman Shawn White said problems continued into Sunday with signs on Web sites saying, “Come back later.”

13.02.07 WASHINGTON, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Software & Information Industry Association, the principal trade association for the code and content industry, today announced the release of a major survey and report on the current state of global software development.
A sampling of the research results highlights indicates that companies are increasing their global development efforts. 57% of the participants have significantly increased offshore work in the past 18 months and many plan to add still more in the next 18 months. Growth strategy was cited as an "important" or "critical" driver for 84% of respondents, while increasing speed to market and productivity were the next most important drivers. No single business model was cited as optimum for offshore development, with roughly half of respondents working with an offshore provider, a third operating a subsidiary or captive, and a quarter employing a hybrid model of both approaches.
